The Achiever Programme is Chartered Accountants ANZ's internship initiative with participating employers aimed at tertiary students who are keen to get some paid* practical work experience under their belt during their summer break and be better prepared for entering the workforce when they graduate.
The Programme’s recruitment process is designed to be similar to other graduate recruitment programmes to give interns an idea of what it’s really like to apply for a job.

Your application must show that you have good communication skills and an interest in the business and accounting industry. But how do you demonstrate that? Check out our top five tips.
1. Cover everything in your initial online form
The first step of the application process is filling out the online application. Achiever Programme 2018 alumna Courtney Creighton says that due to the in-depth nature of the hiring process it’s important to know exactly what information you need to provide and ensure you’re ticking as many boxes as possible.
“It’s important to make sure you read all the role requirements clearly and have good references lined-up if needed,” Courtney says.
2. Be on your game for the psychometric test
If your application has stood out to recruiters, you’ll be invited to complete a psychometric test. These are designed to gain a better understanding of your personality and skills. So while it may sound as though you don’t need to prepare, it’s a good idea to.
Researching the kind of test being conducted is a good place to start, then you can prepare for that specific format. However, if you don’t know the exact style, take some online practice tests across various formats so you can develop an idea of what to expect no matter how you’ll be tested.
It’s also important to ensure you’re as well-rested as possible. Psychometric tests require you to provide your gut response - which means answering as quickly as possible. Getting enough sleep will help you to feel alert and ready to tackle the questions.
3. Think of everything ahead of your first interview
The next stage of the application process is a video interview. As you will receive an email with a link to complete the video submission, it’s important that you answer the video well-prepared. Ensuring your network connection is stable, because you don’t want anything standing in the way of you impressing the recruiters.
It’s also a good idea to conduct some research into different industry trends and topics, as well as some common interview questions you can expect. Because your interviewer will be able to see you, dress as though it’s an in-person interview as it’s important that you look the part.
4. Prepare for the assessment centres and phone interviews
One of the final stages of the application process is being invited to attend an assessment centre (for applicants in larger Australian regions and Auckland). Assessment centres involve taking part in a session with other candidates and participating in a variety of activities that test your skills and knowledge.
Activities can include group tasks with fellow candidates, in which recruiters are looking for how you work in a team. Here, make sure you listen to others and communicate with confidence, highlighting that you’re a team player.
If you live in Tasmania, Wellington, Christchurch or a regional area, the next stage in the process is a phone interview. The good news is for these you can have all your notes in front of you! Prepare in advance with reminders of your experience, goals and skills. Having your resume in front of you is a good way to get back on track if you happen to veer off course during your interview as well.
5. Nailing the final interview
The last hurdle of the application process is the final in-person interview. If you’ve made it this far, you’ve done a great job of showcasing your potential and it’s time to meet with your potential employer.
Achiever Programme alumna Krizelle Requilman recommends staging an interview to prepare: “Re-enact an interview scenario with someone ahead of your interview, and have the person you’re practicing with give you feedback on your questions so you know where to improve.”
