Highlights from the 2022 One Young World Summit

In September, CA ANZ sent two delegates to the 2022 One Young World Summit - Maxine Diciembre, a CA ANZ student representative based in Perth, and Luka Licul, one of our student affiliates from Wellington.

Having made the trip to Manchester, United Kingdom for the event, they reflect on the highlights of the four-day experience designed to inspire young leaders from around the world.

What is One Young World?

The annual One Young World Summit is described as the landmark event of the year for young leaders around the world.

The conference brings together the brightest, emerging young pioneering minds from around the world to work together towards shaping a positive future for everyone. It’s a chance to work with industry and humanitarian leaders and meet representatives from over 190 global businesses, NGOs and educational institutions.

Over 2,000 young leaders attended the event, where they heard from global figures and industry leaders such as former Irish president Mary Robinson, Director General of the World Health Organisation Dr Tredos Adhanom Ghebreyesus, economist Inger Andersen, and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex.

“One of the speakers there was a victim of modern slavery, and it was interesting hearing about her experiences. I found the session quite emotional, and it was impactful for me…it gave me a lot to think about and made me think about how I should change the way I live.”

Highlights from the other side of the world

1. The sheer diversity of the event

With delegates gathered from over 190 countries, the diversity is often described as one of the greatest features of the event. One unforgettable aspect for the delegates was feeling the energy in the room as the display of the different cultures from all over the world came together at the opening ceremony.

2. The chance to listen to a range of different presentations, panel discussions and keynote speakers

This is the centrepiece of the event; attendees are given the opportunity to hear from various industry leaders and subject matter experts speaking on topics of global importance. This year’s summit was centred around five challenges or global issues – conflict prevention, gender equality, oceans, ethical leadership and health. Each day focused on a different challenge, where attendees heard an array of different perspectives that broadened their horizons.

“One of the speakers there was a victim of modern slavery, and it was really interesting hearing about her experiences. I found the session quite emotional, and it was impactful for me…it gave me a lot to think about and made me think about how I should change the way I live.”  - Luka

“I learnt that small actions like not using single-use plastic and encouraging other people to do the same, will contribute to helping us preserve our oceans’ ecosystem…together our small actions will create a big wave.” – Maxine

3. Being able to network with others during collaborative workshops and action sessions

Delegates had the chance to mingle and chat with each other in networking workshops, and shared different experiences and perspectives in action sessions. These sessions encouraged delegates to discuss specific topics such as refugees and migration and was an opportunity to speak with people they might not typically meet.

"I got to hear from the experiences of two people, one of them was hosting a refugee from Ukraine and the other one worked for a charity that deals with refugees. It was really cool hearing about what they were up to, it was inspiring and gave me things I could improve in my own life.”  – Luka

4. Coming together as part of a global community of young leaders

Every individual involved in One Young World was just as eager as the next to contribute to solving the pressing issues society faces and all gathered to share, discuss, debate, challenge, and inspire one another. It’s an environment where purpose-led young people united to see how they can make a difference together.

The One Young World Summit was a great opportunity for emerging young leaders from all walks of life to broaden their horizons, create lasting connections as they interact with like-minded individuals, and be inspired. Ultimately, it encourages attendees to return home with a strengthened drive to create a positive impact in the communities they work and live.
