What are you studying?
Accounting and Commercial Law.
What are your career/life aspirations?
At this stage, I am quite certain that I would like to pursue an audit career at one of the Big 4 Accounting firms upon finishing my degree. Once I become a Chartered Accountant and have a solid grasp of the practical accounting knowledge, I would like to return to working at a bank- the dynamic and ever challenging environment of banks is so fascinating!
If you had any advice for your fellow students about tackling university or preparing for the 'real' world, what would it be?
The biggest advice I can give to fellow students either entering or going through university, or preparing for the 'real' world is to not fear success. I remember my friends giving me a slightly odd look when I was applying for a role at Westpac at the age of 17- age where I couldn't even get my own debit card without parental permission! However, despite the odds, I went ahead with the application as I was so passionate about financial literacy and was beyond excited to broaden my knowledge, and my application was indeed successful. I am the youngest to have been employed in my current role to date. The core message behind this personal story of mine is that anything really is possible so long as you align achievement and or success with passion. Give everything your best shot because you never know- you might beat the odds like I did!
What was your fondest memory from university so far?
The fondest memory from university so far was this one week where I decided to work overtime at Westpac as customer demand was particularly high that week. In addition to my normal hours of 20 hours per week across 4 days, I worked an additional day. Working five days whilst attending all my lectures, tutorials, workshops as well as still having university club events and assignments to do as well as tests to prepare for was possibly the 'craziest' thing I did during university so far- the fondest memory I have.
What do you wish other people knew about studying business/accounting?
I wish people were better informed about the different career paths available in business, particularly accounting. Accounting still has a very traditional reputation in that many still expect accountants to be these old-fashioned creatures who sit behind a computer typing away financial figures all day. Although this was my very first impression of accountants, I realised it was so far away from being true the more I became knowledgeable about the accounting profession. I wish more people will be able to see beyond such traditional view, and realise how dynamically evolving accounting profession is.
