Bernice van der Berg

What are you studying?

Finance and Accounting.

Why did you want to become a CA Student Rep?

I became a CA student representative because I believed it would opened many doors and opportunities for me. So far it has given me the opportunity to develop my professional network and industry relevant skills as well as improve my public speaking skills.

How do you want to make a difference in the world?

I believe that a small act of kindness can make a big difference, especially if everyone does it. So that means being kind to one another and doing your part in society. I am currently apart of Reach Out Volunteers where we educate and build important amenities to less fortunate people.

What you are interested in outside of Uni and work?

In my spare time I enjoy being outside! I'm such a nature freak so I love swimming, hiking, camping and traveling!! I adore traveling, my mum has been to the airport at least every six months to pick me up from some exotic adventure. Other hobbies include playing team sports, cooking (I can be a little master chef if I try) and dancing till my legs cant hold me anymore. I also plan and executing a number fundraising events as I am involved with Reach Out Volunteers.

If you had any advice for your fellow students about tackling university or preparing for the 'real' world, what would it be?

The best advice I have been given is that a career is a marathon, not a sprint! A career is a marathon, not a sprint. You can wear yourself out and start to resent work that you previously enjoyed. It's important to allow yourself time to breath and grow. Things will come if you work hard and allow yourself time to get good at things.

What was your fondest memory from university so far?

University is such an amazing experience and it has given me the opportunity to discover more of my strengths and hobbies. I have learned that I am a people person through sharing great memories with friends I have met at social events. I became an Ecoms fresher rep which has opened my eyes to all the opportunities that is out there waiting to be exploit. I learned that I enjoy helping people and running event through planning and executing fundraising events for the Reach Out Volunteers.
