Courtney Colman

What are you studying?

Bachelor of Law/Commerce (Accounting).

How do you want to make a difference in the world?

My philosophy is that innovation in business makes the world go round. I strive to join a company, where they aim to be leaders in innovation within the accounting industry. Even though I may play a small part in transforming our business economy, I know the collective effort of other professionals will advance new ideas and methods.

What are your career/life aspirations?

My dream job would be CEO of a company that I'm passionate about. With this role I'd like to be able to balance family life and also have the opportunity to travel. In order to reach this long term goal, I aspire to gain a graduate position with a reputable professional services firm. I'll then undertake the CA Program, to further my accounting studies.

If you had any advice for your fellow students about tackling university or preparing for the 'real' world, what would it be?

Participate in everything! Opportunities can arise unexpectedly, however they don't simply turn up at your front door. Join every club that interests you and attend their events. You'll meet like-minded students, who may become future business connections. Go to networking events! The most important skill in the world is the ability to communicate with all types of people.

Tell me how you first got involved in with accounting/business, what inspired you?

I was inspired by my dad to undertake accounting at university. He's a qualified Chartered Accountant and has used his expertise to travel the world. I've seen first hand how successful you can become with an accounting qualification.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about studying business/accounting?

Accounting is more than just number crunching. In order to be successful you have to be able to communicate information to colleagues or clients. Accounting can be as social as you make it. Accounting is a career that allows you to travel the world and gain experience in numerous industries. If you choose to study accounting, attend every networking event offered.
