What are you studying?

Accounting / Finance.

Why did you want to become a CA Student Rep?

I have always endeavoured to complete my CA, so having been given the opportunity to get involved with the brand whilst still at university was one I could not pass up. My initial intentions behind applying was to increase my self awareness of the brand, and what it required me to do whilst at university. However, the exposure this opportunity has given me has been extremely informative and rewarding, both from a personal and professional sense.

What are your career/life aspirations?

Although cliché, I seek to combine my passion for problem solving and analytics, with the ability to travel through my job. Since beginning university I have always had aspirations of working within a London based professional services firm for at least a couple years upon graduation. Today, I maintain these aspirations and am progressively working towards achieving that goal.

If you had any advice for your fellow students about tackling university or preparing for the 'real' world, what would it be?

I would advise to put yourself out there, it is a cliche I know, but I personally witness to many of my peers pigeon holing themselves to academia. Forever ignoring the networking opportunities offered around them for a few extra hours on the books. Although, I acknowledge achieving good grades is a crucial step towards any future goals / job prospects. The real world experience gained from networking and voluntary causes are second to none, and is something I have benefited from greatly, both personally and professionally.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about studying business/accounting?

I was once told "everyone wants an accountant", and in all truth I never really understood what that meant until recently. However, in my brief experience in the corporate world, I could not endorse this statement to be any more true. Having an accounting background/ qualification is a foundation which is widely recognised by the business world, both here (Australia) and overseas. It creates a basis that can be used to catapult yourself into any area of business, whether that remains to be accounting, or even finance and management roles. For example, I would one day like to work within a professional services firm based out of London. How I plan on doing this, is by establishing myself as an accountant first, knowing that any future job applications I lodge will be looked upon far more fondly, having had an accounting background.
