Mary Artinian

What are you studying?

Accounting and Business Law majors.

Why did you want to become a CA Student Rep?

I believe the Chartered Accountants Program is an amazing opportunity for anyone to build their skillset, expand their mind and connect with extraordinary people. After learning more about CA throughout high school and university by attending their events, I knew I wanted to be a part of the fun, so I applied to become a CA Student Representative.

How do you want to make a difference in the world?

To change the world, I believe it is important for everyone to commit to fostering positive growth in their local communities. My goal is to empower others to find, realise and develop their passions, because I believe that when someone has found their passion, the sky is the limit. I am particularly committed to helping people from disadvantaged communities, like refugees, to explore new opportunities and contribute positively to those around them.

What you are interested in outside of Uni and work?

Off campus, I am involved in Armenian dance and regularly volunteer for the Cake Decorators' Guild of NSW and the Cake Decorators' Association, particularly when we bake for Meals on Wheels and other charities. When I'm not watching movies, boxing, dancing or playing basketball, I use my non-uni time to run my own cake business, Sapphire Cakes.

What was your fondest memory from university so far?

I had the opportunity of being my group's team leader when we volunteered for UNSW Business School for Open Day. It was an amazing experience where I got to meet some great people, work all over UNSW and share my love for getting involved on campus with prospective students.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about studying business/accounting?

I would say go for it! No matter what you want to do later down the track, having a base in accounting will open many doors. It is such a diverse degree, and will be helpful in just about any industry, whether you end up starting your own business, working for an accounting firm, or anything which involves providing value to others.
